RACE FOR GOLDEN BOOT

Golden Boot

The race for the Golden boot is down to six players and with David Villa at the top of the list, he is unsurprisingly the favourite, but with goals scored in the 3rd place play-off counting, it is anything but assured.

Current Standings:

5:David Villa
5:Wesley Sneijder
4:Gonzalo Higuain
4:Robert Vittek
4:Miroslav Klose
4:Thomas Mueller
4:Diego Forlan
3:Luis Suarez

Obviously Higuain and Vittek cannot score any more goals, so cannot win the Golden boot, but the other six players in the list all have a chance of landing the prize.

Villa is 5/6 favourite, with Sneijder at 5/2, but considering the nature of the final and how it looks to be a cagey affair, they both look a little short. There is a strong likelyhood that there will be a dead heat at the top and backing villa at 5/6 would see a loss if it were to be a two way split.

It is worth looking further down the list to the players who are playing in the 3rd place pla-off.

Miroslav Klose is 11/2 and that represents more value as he will be going all out to score the goals he needs to become the all time leading World Cup goalscorer.

Below that both Muller and Forlan at 16/1 and 20/1 respectively could also be worth a small interest.

Muller has looked a class act in this competition and Germany missed him last night against Spain. It would be no major surprise to see him pop up with another goal to get a share of the spoils.

The same can be said of Forlan. Our antepost each way pick at 66/1, he looks good for a share of the each-way money, but if he returns to fitness ahead of the 3rd place match he could well get a couple of goals that would put him bang in contention.

A big advantage of backing someone in the 3rd place play-off to be top scorer is the fact that you will be able to lay off if they get the required goals as the game takes place a day before the final.
